A new academic year is underway, which means schoolkids of all ages are once again filling their brains with knowledge. And, let’s face it, probably grumbling about too much homework. But there’s a light at the end of the tunnel: recess.

Taking a short break from learning is essential to keep children active and engaged, and proper school playground equipment is key.

What’s Trending in School Playground Equipment

They say the only constant in life is change, and school playground equipment is no exception. Much like everything from fashion and furniture to pop culture, tastes evolve. If they didn’t, we’d all still have avocado green fridges in our kitchens!

Here are the hottest school playground equipment trends for the 2023-24 school year.

  • Inclusive playgrounds. There has been a movement toward making playgrounds Inclusive for several years now, and the reasons are clear: playgrounds that are designed to be accessible and enjoyable for children of all abilities promote diversity, engagement, and socialization. Inclusive school playground equipment includes features like ramps, accessible routes, unitary surfacing, wheelchair-accessible play structures, and sensory play elements. Inclusive climbing structures featuring ramps, multiple levels, and a variety of climbing challenges are a great addition.
  • Sensory play. Physical exercise isn’t the only stimulation kids need. Sensory play that engages all the senses is important for children's fine and gross motor skill development. It aids their language skills and cognitive growth, and encourages social interaction. Sensory play elements in school playground equipment can include water tables, sandboxes, musical play structures, and nature-based play features. Adding a variety of different shapes, colors, and textures is an attention-grabbing way to get kids interested.
  • Outdoor learning. Taking learning outside is another trend that is gaining popularity. Studies show that play-based learning helps students learn STEM subjects, develop language skills, and enhance creativity. Plus, it’s more fun than a stuffy old classroom! School playground equipment that focuses on outdoor learning might include a mix of features such as balance beams and seesaws, raised garden beds, outdoor classrooms, musical features, and nature trails.
  • Covered playgrounds. Covered playgrounds allow children to play outdoors when the weather is uncooperative. Trees are great, but not all school playground equipment has natural shelter. A roof or canopy offers protection from the sun and rain, and gives teachers and other adults shelter, as well. They also ensure recess won’t be cut short. Covered playgrounds are especially important in areas with hot or cold climates.
  • Climbing equipment. Climbing equipment is a trend that never seems to go out of style that goes hand-in-hand with moms and dads warning them “don’t go too high!” Climbing walls, monkey bars, nets and ladders, and other climbing structures help children develop strength, balance, and problem-solving skills. They’re also popular with older kids who might not be as interested in slides and swings anymore.

Bottom line? When choosing school playground equipment, consider the needs of all children. The equipment should be safe, accessible, and fun for students of all ages and abilities. Need help getting started? Contact a Barrs Recreation representative today!
