The new playground at the Greenwood County Recreation Complex results from years of planning, advocacy, and community support in Greenwood County. This project has been a priority for the residents and council members long before funding was approved in 2016 through a Capital Funding Sales Tax. The funds have brought the community’s vision of a destination park to life, contributing to the development of the expansive 85-acre complex.
The primary goal of the play space was to create an area where all children regardless of ability, could play together. This project fulfills a crucial need in the community as the nearest inclusive playground was previously 45 minutes away. The new playground provides accessible opportunities for play and social interaction closer to home.

The new playground at the Greenwood County Recreation Complex is the largest and newest play space in the area. It features innovative play items such as the Inclusive Orbit, Rev8, and a largely ramped 5-12 structure. Other accessible features include the pour-in-place surfacing, concrete sidewalks, a nearby covered pavilion, and family-accessible restrooms, which ensure that the space is inviting and usable for all.
The design of the playground is an extension of the community, blending safe and modern equipment with nature-inspired elements. The log tunnel and stream-themed pour-in-place highlight the natural beauty of the surrounding areas. At the same time, the large oak tree adjacent to the play space provides natural shade over Percussion Play musical instruments and seating for caregivers. Shade was an important design element, ensuring users and caregivers remain cool and comfortable during hot Carolina summers.
The Greenwood County Recreation Complex is an example of what can be achieved when a community comes together for a shared vision. We are grateful to have been a part of the inclusive playground that will continue to create a space for families to promote play, accessibility, and community connection.
