Downtown Park is the perfect green space in downtown Waxhaw, North Carolina. Barrs Recreations April McLaurin began working with Waxhaw in 2021 to bring the Town’s vision of a nature play playground to life. Downtown Park features not only a playground, but an interactive stream, fitness area, pump track, flex court, walking paths, local art, amphitheater, and a large promenade for town events. Talk about the place to be! 

Waxhaw’s Parks and Recreation team led by Director Dena Sabinske drove the design and vision for both the park and playground. Dena and her team passionately, thoughtfully, and strategically designed the park and playground to meet the multigenerational, cognitive, and physical needs of every member of the community. Accessibility was at the forefront of the planning process with amenities such as large family restrooms as well as a multitude of inclusive play features such as wheelchair-accessible swings and carousel. In addition to the play space, there is a fitness area for seniors, a flex court complete with a basketball tree for all ages and abilities, and a pump track for teens ensuring everyone has a place to play. The natural topography of the space was not only maintained but leveraged to create a geographically layered space that combines the natural elements with unique ties to Waxhaw and Union County creating an experience to be remembered. 

The playground itself is true to the roots of the park, full of natural colors like Ochre Brown and Pine Green. The Berliner play structure is seamlessly nestled into the side of the hill, allowing ramped access to the Greenville Combi.847 and fast lane slide. This structure is also accessible by a ladder or the rope access net from the bottom of the hill. The artificial turf keeps the natural feel while adding a natural play element for all to slide down. Along the walking trails leading up to the playground are items from Percussion Play’s Inspired by Nature line can be found and continue to emphasize the natural elements of the playground in a modern setting. Not to forget the swings! Five total bays of swings complete the park with inclusive Palmetto saucers from Berliner along with Konnection, freedom, traditional, and tot swings from Burke!
