Inclusive Playround Design

Inclusive play equipment is no longer a trend– it has become a staple of well-designed play spaces. At Barrs Recreation we believe that play is for all! Inclusive playgrounds are integral to our mission as they enhance the lives of all parkgoers by providing equal opportunities for play, social interaction, and physical development. By utilizing the principles of Universal Design, we ensure that every user feels that the space is truly for them. Many aspects of our daily environment lack inclusivity, creating unnecessary obstacles for those with disabilities. However, the playground does not have to be one of those places. By removing barriers that previously prohibited play, we can create environments where all children can learn and thrive.

Our inclusive playground design is guided by the following six principles:

Secure: our equipment meets or exceeds safety standards to minimize hazards and build users' confidence to take risks. For example, the aro spinning chair may look daunting at first, but the tilted seat and side rails ensure the users' security. This chair is also at transfer height which makes for easy access for those that use mobility devices.

Approach: the space surrounding and within the equipment allows the user to maneuver with confidence and comfort. Double-wide ramps allow for two users to utilize mobility devices to pass each other. Other equipment items allow for ease of entry such as the inclusive orbit which is a carousel that is flush with the surfacing.

Ease: surfacing and equipment layout that promotes easy accessibility to all equipment with minimal effort from the user. Pour-in-place surfacing is a popular choice for inclusive playgrounds as it provides a uniform surface flush with walkways and ramps leading to the structure.

Perceptible: all important information is presented so that all users can understand. We offer many communication boards that offer an alternative communication method for non-speaking individuals and panels such as braille, sign language, and Spanish.

Intuitive: This is equipment that is easy to understand and allows for exploration without frustration. Musical play is the perfect example of intuitive equipment as it is accessible to all and helps to develop imaginative, cooperative, and problem-solving skills.

Equitable: Play items that promote communication, and collaboration which are also accessible to users of various age groups and abilities. The inclusive Movmnt brings out your competitive nature and is perfect for those 5 to 95 and is wheelchair accessible!

When planning your inclusive playground there are additional factors to be considered as well! The proximity of the playspace to additional park amenities such as restrooms and water fountains along with infrastructure such as parking. Fencing has become a popular enhancement to many playgrounds as it provides an additional layer of safety and security for all users and caregivers.

At the end of the day, inclusive playground equipment is not just about play, it's about building a more equitable future where all ages and abilities are celebrated, respected, and accommodated.
