Introducing Barrs Recs August Project of the Month, Va-Du-Mar McMillan Park! This playground is part of a larger multifaceted recreational facility, part of the Spartanburg County Parks and Recreation system.  Va-Du-Mar McMillan also features a disc golf course, walking trail, picnic shelters, restrooms, tennis courts, pickleball courts, splash pad, and sand volleyball courts. 

Spartanburg County Parks partnered with Barrs Recreation to design and install a bright, inviting play space to replace their aging 14-year-old structure. The goal was to create a colorful, expansive play area that would serve as a standout amenity for the entire community. Planning began in July 2023, involving collaboration between the playground committee, Parks and Recreation staff, and Barrs Sales Consultant, Ashley Barrs. Ashley brought the goals of the committee to Burke’s designers to develop several concepts, which were refined into the final design you see today.

The vibrant “Macaw” color scheme – aqua, lime, yellow, orange, and grey – sets the tone for a bright and lively play space, which spans over 5,000 square feet. The play area includes a large 5-12 structure and a 2-5 structure, each with age-appropriate equipment and ample shade for the hot summer months. Accessibility was a key focus of the playground committee with specific equipment such as the Volta Spinner, Freedom Swing, and sensory rail on the partially ramped 5-12 structure. The pour-in-place surfacing is another accessible feature of this playground, while the fencing ensures an additional element of safety. 

Brian Rogers, the former deputy director of Spartanburg County Parks Department praised the completed project, and that it was a “Great experience working with Barrs Recreation”. He also emphasized that Ashley was over-accommodating, answered all questions, and met all of the needs that the team at Spartanburg had. 

In addition to the playground, Barrs Recreation also Supplied and installed the splash pad on-site, which was a much-anticipated upgrade to one of the fastest-growing areas in the community.
